My first UX design role started with a personal challenge: crafting a professional CV that stood out. I explored the internet for templates, writing guides, and any tool to streamline the process.
At first, I tried traditional methods like Google Docs and Word and even experimented with CV templates. While these options offered some flexibility, they also required significant time and effort. Adjusting content, aligning grids, and ensuring consistent spacing became a repeating task, often leaving me with underwhelming PDF exports.
Then, I tried an online CV builder platform. It was overwhelming with all the different functions and lots of advertising. Finally, I reached the end of finishing the CV and tried to download it. The pop-up window told me this was a paid feature for downloading PDFs.
All in all, the search results are overwhelming, and old-fashioned ways are time-consuming.

Insight
Our user interviews revealed a fascinating insight: some participants compared building their CV to playing with Lego. They enjoyed the creative freedom and the satisfaction of creating a final product they could proudly share.
However, the interviews also highlighted a different set of concerns. Several participants mentioned Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and their CV's visibility. They desired a tool to optimise their CVs for ATS compatibility, increasing their chances of being seen by potential employers.

From talking to the interviewees, we slowly realised that the experience of creating a CV is not only about writing about your experiences but also assuring job hunters can easily use the templates to create a CV that belongs to them. Also, they can make changes quickly without visually messing up their layout.
We aim to ensure a seamless transition from job-hunting to the CV writing process without concerns about the final product meeting industry standards.

However, this shift seems to come at the expense of their original purpose: helping users create strong CVs. We noticed that these platforms might be spreading too thin, overlooking the need to thoroughly address users' core needs when crafting their CVs.
This is where CV Icream comes in! We aim to develop a Minimum Viable Product (MVP in the first phase) focusing on one key objective: helping users create visually appealing, industry-standard CVs.
We believe that dedicating our efforts to this single goal can deliver a more effective and user-centred solution. And build the products around the needs of creating a solid CV.

So here it is: CV Icream is online (it's the MVP). We found 5 participants to do remote moderated usability testing and collected 23 participants who work in design, tech, retail, and education industries to do remote unmoderated testing. And we discovered some problems and potential product developments.
